West End Racing Club - Early days at 83 Commercial St.

The West End Racing Club, a non-profit, sailing club for children between the ages of 8 and 16, began as a loose association of neighborhood kids on the beach in front of Francis 'Flyer' Santos' boat livery. As interest grew and money was raised, the property at 83 Commercial St. was acquired and in the 1950's the organization boasted a brand new official clubhouse.

The following photo archive consists of pictures taken by Larry Richmond, a businessman from NY and one of the founders of the WERC. From construction to dedication, from sailing to fun on the beach, art raffles and award dinners, the WERC has been a vital asset to town children and visitors alike. It has been in continuous operation since its inception and will, hopefully, carry on its traditions of water and boat safety for many years to come.

Photos loaned to the Provincetown History Project by Lauren Richmond.
