Joyce Johnson Interviews Flyer Santos (6-14-02)

Joyce Johnson WOMR "Sands of Time" interview with Flyer Santos on June 14, 2002. Aged 86 at the time of this interview, is the grandson of a Whaler/Schooner fisherman, and the son a Schooner Man. He’s built boats for decades at "Flyer’s" Boatyard, now owned by his son, Francis John ("Grassy"), located on the former site of the Provincetown Wharf Theatre (home of Eugene O’Neill’s first plays). He started the West End Racing Club, mainly to teach kids to swim and sail, since "not one in a hundred" fishermen knew how to swim. He is the lead builder of the half-scale model of the Rose Dorothea fishing schooner in the (former Chrysler / Heritage Museum) current Provincetown Library. The schooner took 10-11 unpaid years to build, using second-hand materials. "Flyer" credits the sail to Matt McGuire, Nova Scotian sail maker, and the scroll work to Ernie Enos, Graphic Artist who used a special paint he’d mixed 10 years before.
