John R. Smith Scrapbook
This is a collection of photographs taken by photographer John R. Smith who was born in 1859 and died in 1945. Mr. Smith documented common scenes around Provincetown as well as events that would come to have major historical significance such as the building of the Provincetown post office, the high school and the Pilgrim Monument. There are scenes of Long Point and Highland Lighthouses and the remains of the Centenary M. E. Church after it burned to the ground. You will find photos of the raising of the S-4 submarine, the destruction of property after bad storms and the building of the 'new' beach road. There are many photos of Town Hall, both in its original location on High Pole Hill and then subsequently when it was built on Ryder St. There are parades and gardens and dunes and dirt roads as well as a picture of the members of the Provincetown Fire Dept. in front of Company 3. Not to mention wharves, boats, fishermen, life savers and the Lipton Cup. This is a rich and varied collection of 165 images that breath life into days gone by. | |
