Historic District Survey information for 449 Commercial St
Architectural Description: 449 Commercial St. is a 2-story, 7-bay, Greek Revival-style dwelling; side-gable roof is sheathed in asphalt shingles, box cornice with partial returns, three interior brick chimneys on rear roof slope; exterior is clad in clapboard siding with wood shingles on secondary facades, wood corner boards and trim; building sits on a brick and concrete block foundation; fenestration includes 6/6 wood DHS, 2/2 wood DHS; primary entrance is accessed by a wood panel door; exterior steps to alternate entrance on rear facade; open porches on 1st and 2nd stories; rear addition.
Historical Narrative: As per Tom Boland (1994): Although there is a structure at this site in 1858, the property was owned by S. Bangs, who had a wharf nearby. The atlas of 1880 indicates that 447 and 449 Commercial were owned by J. Kiley. By 1907, the properties were split and 449 was owned by Edward P. Seaver who was the Superintendent of Schools in Boston. Mr. Seaver also owned the house across the street at 440 Commercial. Currently "Nautilus" (2003).
