Architectural Description: Address in field: 281 Commercial Street; 281 Commercial St. is a 2-story, 3-bay commercial building; gable-front roof is sheathed in asphalt roof shingles, partial cornice returns; exterior is clad in wood shingles with wood corner boards and trim, and brick facing on bottom of front facade wall; building sits on a brick foundation; fenestration includes 6/6 wood DHS, 1/1 wood DHS windows, single-pane wood-framed storefront windows, primary entrance is accessed by a modern aluminum pane-and-panel door; several side entrances for businesses; modern 1-story shed addition on side facade connects this building to 283 Commercial Street.
Historical Narrative: As per Tom Boland (1994): Shown on the 1858 map, 281 Commercial Street was owned by S. Nickerson in 1880. As of 1901-1907 it was operated as a livery by James Campbell. Mr. Campbell is noted in 1890 as working as a teamster or jobber.
