Architectural Description: 438 Commercial St. is a 1-1/2 story, astylistic center entry cottage; side-gable roof is sheathed in asphalt shingles, gable dormer, rebuilt paired chimneys; exterior is clad in clapboard siding with wood trim; building sits on a brick foundation; fenestration includes 2/2 replacement DHS, 9/16 and 2/2 DHS on right side facade, 2/2 DHS in gable dormer, louvered operable shutters; primary entrance is accessed by a panel door with wood storm door, pilasters, frieze and sidelights; center porch with Doric columns; gable dormer is centered and has full cornice return; right side facade has secondary entry.
Historical Narrative: As per Tom Boland (1994): The address of this location is formerly 409 Commercial Street. The house at 438 Commercial Street is first shown on the 1836 map. In 1858 it was owned by I. Turner. By 1880, the property had been sold to S. Adams. In 1901, the property is listed as that of Edward P. Seaver, the Superintendent of Schools in Boston.
