Architectural Description: 227-229 Commercial St. is a 1-1/2-story, 3-bay, Classical Revival-style commercial building; low-pitched hipped roof is sheathed in asphalt shingles, modillions and dentils at cornice, hipped dormers; exterior is clad in wood shingles, wood pilasters have convex fluting and are located at corners and between bays; building sits on a parged foundation; fenestration includes single-pane plate glass window on front facade, 4-pane and 6-pane fixed wood historic windows on side facades, windows have heavy wood entablature surrounds, paired 12-light wood awning windows in hipped dormer; primary entrance is accessed by modern large-pane doors in the center bay, entrance is sheltered by a 1-story pedimented portico supported by Ionic columns, portico has cornice with dentils and modillions; secondary entrance on front facade is accessed by modern large-pane doors; paired loading doors located on east facade are surrounded by 6-pane wood fixed windows; later addition to south facade includes single-pane wood awning windows and 2/2 horizontal wood DHS and a recessed loading dock.
