Architectural Description: 496 Commercial St. is a 2-story, 5-bay dwelling; hipped roof is sheathed in wood shingles; center brick chimney; exterior is clad in clapboard siding; fenestration includes 12/12 vinyl DHS; primary entrance in center bay is accessed by a modern panel door on an enclosed 1-story pediment entry porch; enclosed 1-story hipped-roof wing on right side facade with modern multi-light picture window on the front, 10/10 wood DHS, 6/6 wood; 2-story addition on rear/side with 6/6 wood, interior brick chimney; addition attached to 1-car, 2-story garage with front-gabled roof; garage is concrete block with wood shingles on upper story; modern vinyl overhead garage door with 6/6 wood DHS in gable end; 2nd-story exterior entrance to garage; yard is enclosed by a wood picket fence.
Historical Narrative: As per Tom Boland (1994): "Although indicated on the 1836 map, it is not until the 1858 atlas that the owner of 496 Commercial Street is P. Dyer. P. Dyer remains owner through the 1880 atlas and in 1901 it is noted that the house belongs to H. Dyer with Hannah and Hettie Dyer residing there."
