Historic District Survey information for 401 Commercial St
Architectural Description: 401 Commercial St. is a 2-story, 5-bay, Greek Revival-style dwelling; side-gable roof is sheathed in wood shingles, partial cornice returns, two interior brick chimneys with corbelled caps; exterior is clad in wood shingles with clapboard siding on the side facade; building sits on a brick foundation; fenestration includes single DHS windows with simple wood lintels flanked by shutters; primary entrance is accessed by a panel door with fanlight and simple wood lintel, reached full-width modern wood deck; 1st- and 2nd-story decks extend from side facade.
Historical Narrative: As per Tom Boland (1994): The house at 401 Commercial Street first appears on the 1858 atlas which indicates that it was owned by W. Conwell who also had a wharf there. In 1880, the house was under the ownership of A.F. Small. And in 1886, the site is named Smalls Wharf. Mr. Small was a merchant tailor whose shop was located at what was then 301 Commercial Street. Mr. Small's ownership of the house continued through 1907.
