Architectural Description: 173 Commercial street is a 2-1/2 story, 3-bay Neoclassical-style commercial building; gable-front roof is sheathed in asphalt shingles, partial cornice returns; exterior is clad in wood shingles with wood trim; building sits on a brick foundation; fenestration includes canted single-pane storefront display windows, paired 8-pane vinyl casements on 2nd story, large historic multi-pane window on side facade, inoperable shutters; primary entrance is composed of two recessed doorways accessed by single wood doors with single-pane transoms; both doorways are flanked by canted single-pane storefront display windows with fixed transoms and wood panels underneath; storefront has wood surround with a gable parapet; 1st-story cornice wraps around secondary facades; rear facade has 3 stories; building may have originally been 1-story with parapet roof.
Historical Narrative: As per Tom Boland (1994): The property at 173 Commercial Street was constructed by B.H. Dyer as one of his original wharf buildings. It served as a hardware store throughout its history and in 1880 and 1901-1907, is noted as owned by Benjamin H. Dyer. The present hardware store at this location still bears the 'B.H. Dyer' name.
