Architectural Description: 520 Commercial St. is a 1-1/2 story, 4-bay 3/4 cottage; side-gable roof is sheathed in asphalt shingles; central brick chimney at ridge; exterior is clad in wood shingles with wood corner boards and trim; fenestration includes 6/6 wood DHS, operable louvered shutters, right side facade contains 4/4 and 2/1 DHS wood, left side facade contains 6/6 DHS wood with inoperable shutters; primary entrance is accessed by a panel door and aluminum storm door; wood door surround with pilasters, transom and dentil-like trim along top of surround; secondary entry on right side facade; front yard is enclosed by a picket fence.
Historical Narrative: As per Mary Avellar (1976): "Home of Gerritt Hondius noted artist. Wife well known pianist. Hondius (1891-1970). Born Kampen Holland July 4, 1891 of a distinguished line of artists. Studied Royal Academy of The Hague, Lauren Art Colony, Lauren, Holland, Max Weber Art Student's League. Had more than 55 one-man shows in America and Europe." (CONFLICT WITH HISTORY FOR NO. 516) As per Tom Boland (1994): "Shown on the 1858 map as belonging to P. Atkins, 520 Commercial is an early example of the Federal style. In 1880, the owner was Mrs. Johnson."
