Architectural Description: 68 Commercial St is a 1-1/2-story; 3-bay sidehall cottage with 4-bay side ell and rear addition; the roof is clad in wood shingles with a wood cornice and slight return; 2 gable dormers on front and 1 dormer on rear of side ell; brick corbelled chimney at roof ridge; exterior clad in clapboard; corner pilasters and frieze below eaves; fenestration includes 6/6 DHS wood replacement windows with storms; Centered bay window in gable end supported by paired knee braces; 2 entries on front facade both with wood pilasters and entablature; primary entrance on front gable portion has 5-light sidelights; Rear addition has exterior steps to secondary entries at 1st and 2nd floors.
Historical Narrative: As per Tom Boland (1994): Noted as owned by S. Soper in 1858 and staying in the Soper family until at least 1880 when Mrs. S. Soper is listed as the resident. In 1901, the property was owned by James M. Burke, who was a reporter for the Boston Herald.
