Architectural Description: 138 Commercial St. is a 1-story, 4-bay, vernacular Federal-style 3/4 cottage; side-gable roof is sheathed in asphalt shingles, interior stucco-clad brick chimney at roof ridge, skylights; exterior is clad in wood shingles; fenestration includes 2/2 DHS replacements with wood surrounds and operable shutters, basement windows on side facade consist of 2/2 replacement DHS with storms and single-light casements; primary entrance is accessed by wood panel door with fanlight and wood surround including pilasters with acanthus leaves on the capitals and dentil-like trim above; modern deck extends from front facade; gable-roof addition accessed by sliding glass doors extends from the rear facade; rear addition is lit by single-light casement windows and 2/2 DHS with storms.
Historical Narrative: As per Tom Boland (1994): The owner of 138 Commercial Street as of 1858, was A.D. Knowles. By 1880, the property had changed hands to Mrs. T. Kenny and by 1901, John S. Smith, master mariner, was owner.
